Secretary Lynda Whalley jailed for 32 months for £165,000 theft from ACW Garden Centre in Canal Road, Bradford

A LONG-SERVING employee of a Bradford garden centre, who betrayed the trust of the family running the business by stealing from it for more than nine years, has been jailed.
Lynda Whalley, a 67-year-old grandmother, was locked up for 32 months today after admitting stealing nearly £166,000 from the ACW Garden Centre in Canal Road, Bradford.
Bradford Crown Court heard Whalley, of Grasleigh Avenue, Allerton, Bradford, the company secretary, was regarded as a family friend and had a susbtantial position of trust, effectively involved in the day-to-day financial management of the company.
But she created a fictitious supplier to enable her to transfer money from ACW into her own bank account. On one occasion she created a false invoice to cover up a theft.
The court heard Whalley had financial difficulties and much of the money was spent on day-to-day living, though she paid for a family holiday and a new kitchen from the thefts, which hit the company and meant its 100 employees missed out on a pay rise.
