Domestic abuse calls up by a third after England game






POLICE in West Yorkshire saw a one third increase in 999 calls to domestic abuse incidents after England's first game at the Euro 2016 soccer tournament.
Call handlers at the force contact centre also had to deal with a great number of calls relating to disturbances and alcohol related incidents after England were denied victory by a last gasp Russian equaliser.
In total, West Yorkshire Police handled 3,606 calls, 999 or 101, between 8pm on Saturday night and 3am Sunday morning - 200 up from the previous Saturday night.
Detective Superintendent Darren MInton, of West Yorkshire Police, said: "Following England's first match in the tournament, our call handlers had a busy night taking calls from domestic abuse victims and other calls relating to anti-social behaviour.
