BREAKING UPDATE: Woman, 73, airlifted to hospital after car mounts pavement and carries her through a fence

AN elderly woman has been left badly injured after she was struck by a car which mounted the pavement and carried her through a garden fence.
The 73-year-old victim was walking on the pavement when the car crossed a kerbed grass verge, struck her and then ploughed through a stone and wood panel fence, shortly after 9.30am. The woman was carried on the vehicle into a front garden.
She was flown by air ambulance to Leeds General Infirmary following the accident involving a Volkswagen Passat in Hunters Park Avenue, Clayton.
A West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service spokesman confirmed a crew freed a casualty after the accident.
The accident scene was sealed off by police and traffic diverted.
A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said the 18-year-old male driver had been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and confirmed he had stopped at the scene.
