A “LUNATIC” 90mph driver hurtled along Bradford streets at three times the speed limit with police in pursuit, a court heard.
Mohamed Kakel, 29, sped off from police when they asked him to stop after he nearly drove into their patrol car, Bradford and Keighley Magistrates Court heard yesterday.
Prosecutor Linda Fowler said the officers were stationary at traffic lights at the junction of St Enoch’s Road and Southfield Lane, Wibsey, at 12.55am on July 7, when they saw a Mercedes being driven at speed coming up behind them. They feared it was going to run into the back of them but it braked and skidded to a halt.
The Mercedes turned right into St Enoch’s Road. The officers activated their blue lights and gestured to the driver to switch off his engine.
But Kakel set off at speed towards Wibsey. The car skidded out of control on to the wrong side of the road before reaching a speed of 73mph in a 30mph limit. It was driven along Wibsey High Street and then went on the wrong side of a roundabout.
Mrs Fowler said the Merecedes turned into St Enoch’s Road, reaching a speed of 95mph and was then driven at 90mph in Canterbury Avenue.
It finally crashed into a stone wall in All Saints Road, causing extensive damage to the wall and car.
The driver fled but was caught by the officers who had to use CS gas spray to arrest him.
